Tottenham are turning their attentions to Everton midfielder James McCarthy as hopes of a summer deal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin fade, ItisaGoal can reveal.
Spurs are long-term admirers of McCarthy and are ready to compete with Arsenal for the central midfielder, although Everton are almost certain to resist any bids this month.
The Toffees have reached an impasse with McCarthy over talks regarding an improved contract and Tottenham are closely monitoring the Ireland international's situation.
McCarthy, 24, cost Everton £13 million when he arrived from Wigan in 2013 and the Merseyside club are unlikely to consider any bids worth less than £20m.
Tottenham are keen to sign a top quality midfielder with Premier League experience and are exploring a move for McCarthy amid fears they will miss out on leading target Schneiderlin.
Mauricio Pochettino was desperate to re-unite with Schneiderlin last summer but Southampton refused to sell the Frenchman despite his desire to move to White Hart Lane.
Schneiderlin has played a key role for the Saints this season as they sit third in the Premier League table and Spurs fear he will sign for another club this summer.
Arsenal and Manchester United are among the sides that have been heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old, who wants to play in the Champions League next season.
McCarthy has been identified as a strong alternative, while Spurs remain hopeful of completing a six-month loan deal for Adrien Rabiot this month despite Paris Saint-Germain's reluctance to let the 19-year-old leave.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Adebayor is refusing to leave Tottenham despite enquiries from a number of clubs in Turkey and Italy.
Adebayor has no interest in taking a pay cut on his £100,000-a-week salary and enjoys his life in London, although it is believed he would consider a move to the United States.
The Togo forward has not played for Spurs since the 1-0 defeat to Stoke in November, after which he criticised the club's supporters. He has been unavailable through injury and personal issues, but is still being left out of the squad by Pochettino despite being available for selection.
Spurs would also listen to offers for £26m flop Roberto Soldado but, like Adebayor, the Spaniard is expected to remain in north London for the rest of the season.
Tottenham wanted to sign Wilfried Bony from Swansea but were blown out of the water by Manchester City's financial muscle, while another target, Danny Ings, is almost certain to stay at Burnley until the end of the campaign even though his contract expires in the summer.
