Manchester United deserved to beat Southampton, insists Rooney

Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United deserved to beat Southampton on Sunday but were punished for not taking their chances.

Southampton recorded their first ever Premier League win at Old Trafford following Dusan Tadic's second-half strike, which has lifted Ronald Koeman's men above United into third place in the Premier League.

United also failed to register a shot on target at Old Trafford for the first time since May 2009, and Rooney concedes his side paid the price for being unable to finish their opportunities in front of goal.

"I think that's football, that's how it goes," Rooney told SkySports.

We deserved to win the game today. They had the chance, first minute and the goal which they've taken. Overall we had the better chances, we played the better football and deserved to win but we've been punished for not taking our chances.

"I've seen Southampton play better, to be honest. We stopped a lot of their threats, but we got punished for not taking our goals."
