'It's nothing serious' - Strootman expects short injury absence

The Dutch midfielder, heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, has aggravated a knee problem and Roma have confirmed he will be operated on in Amsterdam

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman requires further surgery on his knee after aggravating the injury in the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina on Sunday - but insists the problem is not serious.

Strootman was substituted in the 34th minute at the Stadio Artemio Franchi - just his sixth Serie A appearance since returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which he sustained in March last year and which caused him to miss the World Cup.

Coach Rudi Garcia played down the injury, but the club confirmed on Thursday that Dutchman, long linked with a reunion with Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, will go under the knife on Friday.

A statement revealed: "Yesterday Kevin Strootman underwent further diagnostic procedures with professors Van Dijk and Kerkhoffs, who previously operated on him.

"The examination revealed a mass of fibrous tissue (known as Cyclops Syndrone), which it is advised should be removed.

"The player is due to undergo arthroscopic surgery in Amsterdam tomorrow, during which the ligament will also be assessed."

Strootman later took to Twitter to stress that he does not expect to be out of action for long.

He posted on his official account: "There's a lot of speculation in the media about me and I would like to explain to all the fans what the real problem is. In the match v Fiorentina I got a knock on my left knee.

"It's bruised and therefore I should rest my knee for a couple of weeks. This gives me the opportunity to remove some scar tissue which has bothered me a bit after the last surgery and this will help me further in getting back to my old level.

"It's nothing serious and I will be back on the pitch as soon as possible."
