Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil
defender Maxwell has
announced his retirement
from international football and
has said he could retire
completely in the near future.
The left-back has made just 10
appearances for the national team but was a member
of the 2014 World Cup squad that made it to the semi-
finals before suffering a humiliating 7-1 defeat to
Germany.
The Paris Saint-Germain player has revealed that his
participation in the 3-0 third-place playoff defeat to
Netherlands in that competition will be his last for
Brazil and has suggested he could bring an end to his
club career at the end of the current season.
"At 33 and with the level of the competition there is, the
Selecao is over for me," the defender told radio
station France Bleu. "The experience of the World Cup
in Brazil was fantastic at first, but the pressure and the
economic environment around us played against us.
"I do not know if I will continue playing for long, I have
not decided. We'll see in February and find out a little
more. Maybe this is the end, maybe I will go on, it will
depend on the desire of the club and maybe the offer
that I have."
The former Ajax, Inter and Barcelona player reflected
on the summer tournament in his homeland, before
looking to the future with PSG, stating his side are still
aiming to win the Champions League.
"The defeat against Germany was a disaster, but the
difference between the two teams is not 7-1. The first
week of vacation in Brazil was very difficult, but then we
talked about it in the locker room at PSG. We're
professionals; we must move on to other things and be
positive for our club.
"The club is built the team to win the Champions
League. It is the ambition, but of course football is
very difficult. In each of the last two seasons we have
been close to the semi-finals and we hope to go further
this year."
